Akzonobel

Involvement in the project

AkzoNobel is contributing to the project with know-how and expertise in the handling of ethyl chloride. Furthermore, AN is contributing with engineering resources and laboratory equipment in the analysis and quality assurance of the EtCl produced within the project.

As a second step AN will in its own pilot plant demonstrate that it is possible to make cellulose ether (Bermocoll) based on a special grade of cellulose developed by Aditya Birla Domsjö and the EtCl derived in the project. Thereafter AN will validate the quality of the final product against their normal products.

Akzo Nobel sees with this project a possibility to secure the sourcing of a strategically important raw material. In addition the raw material will be derived from a carbohydrate that is originating from a renewable carbohydrate source which is completely in line with the company’s sustainability strategy.

Headquartered in Amsterdam, the company has activities in more than 80 countries, and employs approximately 46,000 people.

You will see AkzoNobel innovation all around you. Our science is protecting the world’s most iconic buildings and landmarks. It is helping to keep buildings cool to conserve energy and saving shipping companies both money and carbon emissions by helping their vessels glide through the sea.

“We create everyday essentials to make people’s lives more liveable and inspiring.
Essential ingredients. Essential protection. Essential color”.

A leading global paints and coatings company and major producer of specialty chemicals for both industry and consumers worldwide.

“We’ve built sustainability into our business and functional processes, including two dedicated sustainability sessions each year in the Operational Review Meetings. We set some standards globally where it’s particularly important to do so, including health and safety, environmental protection, product stewardship and compliance.

Our employees have a key role to play in our sustainability performance so we provide training on sustainability and include targets to strive for. This goes all the way up to the board where 30 percent of the conditional grant of shares is based on AkzoNobel’s performance in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices over a three-year period.

Nine billion people are expected to be sharing our planet by 2050; this, alongside the new middle class, even greater urbanization, the long-term constraints of natural resources and climate change raises many challenges and opportunities.

Sustainability is part of our core business, not separate. We have reflected this by integrating sustainability into our company strategy, objectives, core principles and values.

Find out more about how we manage sustainability. Welcome to Planet Possible. Our commitment to doing more with less.”
